What a snow monkey tour from Tokyo costs
The four tours we compare cost ~$150–293 per person, or ~$535 per group for a car of your own, and the gap has less to do with the monkeys than with how you reach them. A coach seat with lunch and a guide sits at one end and a private car priced per group at the other, with a Shinkansen tour in between. This guide puts all ten tours from the site in one table, then adds what the listings leave out, from park entry to crampons.
Ten tours in one table
The four tours on our home page and the six extras from the guides, each at its regular "from" price, taking the lower figure where a tour sits on both booking sites. Two of the private cars charge per group rather than per seat, and the third column says which. Time at the park is what the listing promises, not what traffic leaves you.

What the four main prices buy
The H.I.S. coach day, from ~$150, is the only tour that bundles everything: a seat on a coach from Shinjuku, a live English-speaking guide, a beef sukiyaki lunch at Shinshu Fruitsland and the park ticket, over about 13 hours. From late January to the end of February the Kamakura snow huts come with it at no extra charge. Crampons are sold on board, and the one thing you pay for on the day is whatever you buy at the cafe.
JTB's Shinkansen tour, from ~$293, costs about twice as much, and the difference is mostly the train. Reserved seats on the Hokuriku Shinkansen both ways are included, as are a licensed guide from Nagano Station onward, lunch, park admission and the local transport between them. You ride the train on your own, which our transport guide explains step by step.
The private car from Zameer Haider's team, from ~$127 per person, buys a driver and a vehicle for up to 6 people over about 10 hours, with pickup at your Tokyo hotel and WiFi on request. Park entry is paid at the gate, about ¥800 per adult, and lunch is on you. The driver is not a licensed guide, which some reviewers wanted spelled out more clearly.
Luxurious Travel Master's car, from ~$535 per group, covers up to 5 travelers in a Toyota Vellfire or Crown, or a Land Cruiser on the longest version, for 10–12 hours. Tolls, parking, fuel and a WiFi hotspot are in the price, and so is bottled water with tea and coffee. No meals and no entry tickets are included. Split five ways, the group price lands close to tour 3 per head; for a couple it is the dearest of the four main tours. Private snow monkey tours works through both cars in detail.
The same tour, two prices
A tour's regular price rarely differs between GetYourGuide and Viator, but the reduced prices do, and they change without warning.
- H.I.S. coach. About $150 regular on both sites. GetYourGuide often shows it reduced to about $120, which made it the lower of the two when we compared them;
- Zameer Haider's private car. ~$127 regular per person on GetYourGuide, often shown reduced to about $99;
- Luxurious Travel Master. ~$535 per group regular, often shown at about $428. The same company's Prado tour with Togakushi Shrine, listed at ~$522 per group, often appears at about $418.
Open the listing for your own date rather than trusting the figure in a search result. A reduced price on one site is the only good reason to prefer it over the other, since both refund in full up to 24 hours ahead.

Everything in one ticket
The H.I.S. coach from Shinjuku includes the guide, the sukiyaki lunch and park entry for about 13 hours door to door, from ~$150. Free cancellation until 24 hours before, on either site.
What you pay on top
- Park entry. About ¥800 per adult and about ¥400 per child, paid in cash at the gate on tours 3 and 4 and on the other private cars. Both coaches and the Shinkansen tour include it;
- Lunch. Included on the two coaches and on the Shinkansen tour. In a private car you choose where to eat and pay for it; a reviewer on tour 4 enjoyed apple wine with lunch, and one on tour 3 picked up samosas at a stop;
- Crampons. The H.I.S. coach sells them on board in winter, and reviewers on the private cars rented boots and grips near the park. What to wear says when you need them;
- Tips. Not customary in Japan. The private-car listings leave them to you and ask for none, so budget nothing;
- The train, if you go alone. A reserved Shinkansen seat from Tokyo to Nagano costs roughly ¥8,000 each way, before the local train and bus to the park. Snow monkeys on your own adds it up.
Two cheaper options from the guides
The lowest private fare we found is Cultural Tour Japan's van, from ~$64 per person, which seats six, includes child seats and WiFi, covers tolls and parking and plans stops at Zenko-ji and Shibu Onsen. The catch is a track record of only a couple of dozen reviews, and like the other private cars it leaves park entry and meals out.
The other coach from Shinjuku, Tour&Charter's day trip with a buffet lunch, from ~$130, undercuts H.I.S. by a little and includes park entry and a 130-dish buffet at Suzaka. Its catch comes in two parts: an audio guide and a tour escort instead of a live guide, and a minimum of 15 guests, below which the tour is cancelled about a week ahead.
A family of four, added up
Take two adults and two school-age children. On the H.I.S. coach they pay four seats at ~$150, assuming the adult price for each, and nothing more at the park. In Zameer Haider's car the fare is four times ~$127, then two adult and two child tickets at the park and lunch for four. Luxurious Travel Master charges ~$535 per group for all four, so each person pays a quarter of the group price, again plus entry and food. With five in the party the per-head figure drops further, which is where the group price starts to beat the coach. Snow monkeys with kids covers the trail with children and the age rules on each tour.
Cancelling and paying later
Every main tour refunds in full with 24 hours' notice, and reserve-now-pay-later on both sites means a seat costs nothing to hold while the forecast firms up. The one tour in these guides that can cancel on you is the Shinjuku buffet coach with its 15-guest minimum. Winter dates on the H.I.S. coach fill weeks ahead; the best time to see the snow monkeys covers that, and our park guide explains what the entry fee gets you once you are through the gate.
